NSSA Press Release

All security doors & grilles look the same”. This was true some years ago but now the choice is varied.

Frame materials can be steel or aluminum and grilles (infill material) can be steel, aluminum, stainless steel or decorative. Fixing the grille to the frame can involve riveting, screwing, wedging, welding or crimping.

The Australian Standards for Security Doors and Grilles does not dictate how a security product should be manufactured but sets out a range of testing methods that these products should meet. These tests simulate kicking at the grille, levering at specific points with a 300mm screwdriver and pulling with a weight similar to a large man.

Any of the fixing methods mentioned above can meet these requirements, but must be certified by an accredited testing authority.

The National Security Screen Association (NSSA) considers that a product that meets the Australian Standards can be called a “Security Product” and all of its members offer products of this nature. A product that does NOT meet this standard can be classed as a heavy duty flyscreen, saftey door or grille.

The National Security Screen Association was formed with the well being of the consumer in mind so that people can be safe and secure in their own homes. Members of the NSSA operate under an industry code of practice and offer security products that are certified to the Australian Standards. They are assessed by the Associations’ auditor annually to ensure continued quality is provided to their customers. They can also offer flyscreen or safety grilles when these products are required.

The NSSA services to the public include,

  • Supply information about members’ compliance with the Australian Standard in the inquirer’s geographical area.
  • Supply information about developments in the Australian Standards and how they affect the greater community.
  • Publish a list of members and the NSSA code of practice.
  • Record, investigate and action any complaints received.
